Access
There is a step leading to the main entrance of the Casa Batlló, but it also has two mobile ramps that can be placed over the step to aid accessibility for wheelchair users or other groups who may need them.
Ticket office
The ticket office is outside the building and there is a small ramp to aid accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The counter which sells the tickets is too high for wheelchair users or people who are short in stature .
Itinerary around the different floors that are open to the public
Tourists can visit the different floors in the Casa Batlló: the entrance and lobby, the mezzanine, the attic space and the rooftop and chimneys. They can also climb the staircase connecting the different floors as well as the area at the back of the mezzanine.
There is a period lift providing access to the different floors (except for the rooftop and chimneys). The lift presents some accessibility difficulties due to the fact that it dates from the early 20th century. The main problem stems from its size and the fact that the doors inside the cabin open inwards and have to be operated manually. Wheelchair users may find it difficult to manoeuvre properly. To resolve this issue, the Casa Batlló provides any visitors who require one with a wheelchair of the right dimensions to enable them to go in and out of the lift.
The mezzanine floor presents no major accessibility problems. There is just a small area on this floor that fails to comply with the minimum width requirements for adapted access, and some of the doors are lower than the requisite height.
Some areas of the attic space have a ceiling height lower than the regulation 2.10m. The blind or visually impaired are advised to visit accompanied by someone in order to avoid bumping into certain areas.
Finally, to get to the rooftop and chimneys, visitors have to use a spiral staircase and this may pose a problem for people with reduced mobility. An area of the chimneys ("Espai de l'Aigua") is only accessible via steps.
Adapted toilets
The building doesn't have an adapted toilet.
Alternative communication systems
Special mention must be made of the fact that major efforts have been made to adapt the different communication elements for disabled people. The audioguides have been designed taking into account the needs of blind and visually impaired people. The text of the audioguides is available in Braille and a number of the exhibits have tactile signs.
There is also an e-mail address which can be contacted to request information. This is particularly important for the deaf and hearing-impaired as well as the severely speech-impaired as it provides them with an alternative system for receiving information. The website complies with all the stipulated accessibility requirements, and makes it possible for all groups to gain access to information easily and simply.
