Access

People with reduced mobility are advised to enter the Museum from the square instead of the c/ Baixada del Monestir because the changes in level are not as noticeable. The street is steeply sloping and the type of paving means that some wheelchair users may require assistance.

There is a ramp outside the Museum leading to the main entrance. The principal difficulty for people with reduced mobility is that, once they have reached the main entrance, they have to go up three steps to enter the building.

Itinerary

One area of the monastery complex is not open to visitors.

On the ground floor, people with reduced mobility can gain access to almost all the rooms that are open to visitors. Some of the rooms (the ones between "Infermeria, Petras Albas" and the abbey) have three flights of steps but there is an alternative entrance via the ramp leading to the refectory and kitchen.

The first floor can be reached by two lifts, one in the "Tresors del Monestir" (Monastery Treasures) exhibit and the other next to the abbey. The lift in the "Tresors del Monestir" is slightly hidden behind a glass door but is easily accessible to all users. This lift has no Braille or tactile button panels whereas the other one does, on both the landing and inside the cabin.

People with reduced mobility wishing to take the lift next to the abbey have to use the ramps leading to the refectory to reach the lift.

There are a number of low-height areas or protruding elements which mean that the blind or visually impaired may require help to avoid bumping into them. For instance, the larder (on the lower-ground floor) is only accessible by a corridor with a very low ceiling ( 1.75 m ). It is also worth bearing in mind that, due to the age of the building, some doors are lower than normal and this means that people with reduced mobility may bump into them.

Toilets

There is an adapted toilet opposite the information desk. The main difficulty in terms of accessibility is that they have no hand rails and the corridor is relatively narrow, meaning that wheelchair users may find it difficult to manoeuvre in front of the main door to the adapted toilet.

Alternative communication systems

The monastery has audioguides but they are not specifically adapted to the blind or partially sighted. It has an e-mail address and website which you can contact and visit to look up information.

At the time of writing, there is no information available as to whether there are specific alternative communication systems.
